How to pray, and other litanies

English translation of the Urdu original · Read the original

By Sayyid Noor Alam Misbahi

Note: Huzur Bahr-ul-Irfan (may his shadow endure) ordered that the method of Salah, and remembrances (adhkar) and litanies (wazifas), also be added at the end of the book so that the book becomes more useful. So, in compliance with the order, the following matters are being added:

The Conditions of Salah

Salah has six conditions, which must be fulfilled by the time one says Allahu Akbar; only then will the Salah be valid, otherwise not.

The first condition is purity (taharat), that is, the body and clothes of the worshipper and the place of Salah must be pure.

The second condition is covering the private area (satr-e-'awrat): it is necessary for a man to be covered from the navel to the knees, and for a woman her whole body. If the cloth is so thin that the body shows through, the Salah will not be valid. Young men nowadays wear jeans that are torn in various places; if they are torn above the knee and a quarter of that part remains uncovered for the length of time it takes to say Subhan Allah three times, the Salah will not be valid. Likewise, in this age women wear very thin scarves (dupattas); if the blackness of the hair shows through the scarf, the Salah will not be valid.

The third condition is facing the Qibla.

Ruling: If a person is in a place where he does not know in which direction the Qibla is, and there is no Muslim to tell him, nor is there the sun, moon, stars and so on by which to find it out, such a person should make an effort to determine it (taharri), that is, face the direction in which his heart settles and offer the Salah.

If it is later learned that he was not facing the Qibla, he does not have to repeat the Salah; rather, the Salah is valid.

The fourth condition is the time; that is, if one is to offer the Zuhr prayer, it will only be valid within the time of Zuhr.

The fifth condition is the intention (niyyah). Intention is the name of the firm resolve of the heart; however, saying it with the tongue is recommended.

The sixth condition is the opening takbir (takbir-e-tahrimah), that is, beginning Salah with the name of Allah Most High. For the opening takbir it is best to say Allahu Akbar.

The Method of Offering Salah

The method of offering Salah is this: in a state of wudu, facing the Qibla, stand with a gap of four fingers' width between the front of the two feet, and raise both hands to the ears so that the thumbs touch the earlobes; the fingers should be neither held together nor spread wide, but left in their natural state, and the palms should face the Qibla. Having made the intention, bring the hands down while saying Allahu Akbar and fold them below the navel, in such a way that the heel of the right palm is on the end of the left wrist, the middle three fingers are on the back of the left wrist, and the thumb and little finger are on either side of the wrist. Then recite the opening praise (thana'):

سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰھُمَّ وَ بِحَمْدِكَ وَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالٰی جَدُّكَ وَلَا اِلٰـہَ غَیْرُكَ

Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; blessed is Your Name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god other than You.

Then recite the seeking of refuge (ta'awwudh), that is, A'udhu billahi mina-sh-shaytani-r-rajim (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed);

then say the Basmalah, that is, Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim; then recite al-Hamd (Surah al-Fatihah) and at its end say Amin quietly. After that recite a surah, or three verses, or one verse equal to three. Now go into bowing (ruku') while saying Allahu Akbar, and take hold of the knees with the hands,

in such a way that the palms are on the knees and the fingers are well spread, not with all the fingers to one side, nor with four fingers on one side and only the thumb on the other; the back should be level, and the head in line with the back, neither higher nor lower. And at least three times say

Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent (Subhana Rabbiya-l-'Azim).

Then, saying

Allah hears the one who praises Him (Sami'a-llahu liman hamidah),

stand up straight, and if praying alone (munfarid), after that say

O Allah, our Lord, and to You belongs all praise (Allahumma Rabbana wa laka-l-hamd).

Then go into prostration (sajdah) while saying Allahu Akbar, in such a way that first the knees are placed on the ground, then the hands, then the head between the two hands; not in such a way that only the forehead touches and the tip of the nose makes contact, but rather the forehead and the bone of the nose should be pressed firmly. Keep the arms apart from the sides, the stomach from the thighs and the thighs from the shins; the undersides of all the toes of both feet should be pressed down facing the Qibla, the palms laid flat and the fingers pointing towards the Qibla. And at least three times say

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High (Subhana Rabbiya-l-A'la).

Then raise the head, then the hands, and setting the right foot upright, turn its toes towards the Qibla, lay the left foot flat and sit well and straight upon it, and place the palms flat on the thighs near the knees so that the fingers of both hands point to the Qibla. Then go into prostration while saying Allahu Akbar and prostrate in the same way. Then raise the head, then, placing the hands on the knees, stand up on the front of the feet. Now recite only Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim and begin the recitation. Then, after performing the bowing and prostrations in the same way, set the right foot upright, lay the left foot flat and sit down, and

All greetings, prayers and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

recite it, without adding or omitting a single letter in it. This is called the tashahhud. And when

he comes near the word 'la', let him form a ring with the middle finger and thumb of the right hand, join the little finger and the one next to it to the palm, and at the word 'la' raise the index finger, but without moving it about, and at the word 'illa' let it drop, and immediately straighten all the fingers. If more than two rak'ahs are to be prayed, let him stand up and pray them in the same way, except that in these rak'ahs of the obligatory prayers it is not required to add a surah to al-Hamd. Now, in the final sitting (qa'dah), after which he will end the Salah, after the tashahhud let him recite the Durood Sharif:

O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon our master Ibrahim and upon the family of our master Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send grace upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, as You sent grace upon our master Ibrahim and upon the family of our master Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Then recite:

O Allah, forgive me and my parents and those they begot, and all the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, the living among them and the dead. Indeed You are the Answerer of prayers, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

Or let him recite some other transmitted supplication (du'a ma'thurah), for example:

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِیْ ظُلْمًا کَثِیرًا وَّ اِنَّہٗ لَا یَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ فَاغْفِرْلِی مَغْفِرَۃً مِّنْ عِنْدِکَ وَارْحَمْنِیْ اِنَّکَ اَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِیْمُ

O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You; so forgive me with forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me. Indeed You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Or let him recite this:

اَللّٰھُمَّ رَبَّنَا اٰتِنَا فِی الدُّنْیَا حَسَنَۃً وَّفِی الْاٰخِرَۃِ حَسَنَۃً وَّقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

O Allah, our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

(Bahar-e-Shari'at)

The Obligatory Acts of Salah

Seven things are obligatory (fard) in Salah:

1. The opening takbir (takbir-e-tahrimah): (this is in fact a condition, but the scholars have also counted it among the obligatory acts).

Ruling: If one finds the imam in bowing and goes into bowing while saying the opening takbir, and the takbir is not finished before the hands reach the knees, the Salah will not be valid.

2. Standing (qiyam): that is, standing upright. Its minimum limit is that if one stretches out the hands they do not reach the knees.

Ruling: Standing is obligatory in the obligatory prayers, the Witr, the Sunnah of Fajr, and the prayers of Eid and Baqr-Eid (Eid al-Adha). If someone prays sitting without an excuse, the Salah will not be valid.

3. Recitation (qira'at): that is, reciting at least one verse in both rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer and in every rak'ah of the Witr and voluntary prayers is obligatory upon the imam and upon one praying alone (munfarid).

Ruling: The follower (muqtadi) behind the imam is neither to recite al-Hamd nor to add any surah, whether the imam recites aloud (as in Maghrib, Isha and Fajr) or quietly, as in Zuhr and Asr.

Ruling: In quiet recitation it is obligatory to recite at least loudly enough that, if there were no noise, one could hear oneself what one is reciting. If someone recites so softly that he cannot hear himself, the Salah will not be valid, because the obligation was not fulfilled.

4. Bowing (ruku'): that is, it is obligatory to bend at least so far that if one stretches out the hands they reach the knees.

5. Prostration (sajdah): two prostrations are obligatory in every rak'ah.

(Many of our simple brothers make serious mistakes in prostration, especially in placing the head and the feet. The correct method of prostration is that both the nose and the forehead touch the ground; likewise it is necessary (wajib) that the undersides of at least three toes of both feet touch the ground. If not even the big toe touched, the prostration did not take place at all, and if fewer than three toes were placed, the Salah will have to be repeated.)

6. The final sitting (qa'dah akhirah): that is, after completing the rak'ahs of the Salah, sitting long enough to be able to recite the whole of the At-Tahiyyat.

7. Exiting by one's own act (khuruj bi-sun'ihi): that is, after the final sitting, giving the salam or speaking in a way that ends the Salah. (For this one says As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah.)

The Necessary Acts of Salah

These things are necessary (wajib) in Salah: saying the words Allahu Akbar in the opening takbir; reciting al-Hamd; adding a surah or three short verses to al-Hamd in the first two rak'ahs of the obligatory prayer and in every rak'ah of the Sunnah, voluntary and Witr prayers; in the obligatory prayer, going into bowing immediately after the recitation in the first two rak'ahs; the undersides of three toes of each foot touching the ground in prostration; no pillar intervening between the two prostrations; proper performance of the pillars (ta'dil-e-arkan, that is, performing each pillar correctly and completely); the qawmah, that is, standing up straight after bowing; the jalsah, that is, sitting up straight between the two prostrations; not reciting anything during the tashahhud in the first sitting (that is, reciting only the At-Tahiyyat); reciting the whole tashahhud in every sitting; saying the word salam twice; reciting the Du'a-e-Qunut in the Witr; the takbir of Qunut; the six takbirs of the two Eids; the takbir of bowing in the second rak'ah of the two Eids, and saying the words Allahu Akbar for that takbir; the imam reciting aloud in every audible prayer (Maghrib, Isha, Fajr) and quietly in the inaudible ones; every

necessary and obligatory act being in its proper place; bowing occurring only once in each rak'ah, and prostration only twice; not sitting before the second rak'ah; and not sitting after the third in a four-rak'ah prayer; performing the prostration of recitation (sajdah-e-tilawat) if a verse of prostration is recited, and performing the prostration of forgetfulness (sajdah-e-sahw) if a mistake occurs; there not being a pause of the length of three glorifications between two obligatory acts, two necessary acts, or a necessary and an obligatory act; the follower remaining silent when the imam recites; and following the imam in all the necessary acts except recitation. (Anwar-e-Shari'at)

The Sunnah Acts of Salah

The Sunnah acts of Salah are these: raising the hands for the opening takbir and leaving the fingers in their natural state; not bowing the head at the time of the takbir, and the palms and the undersides of the fingers facing the Qibla; raising the hands before the takbir, and likewise in the takbirs of the two Eids, saying the takbir after bringing the hands up to the ears; a woman raising her hands only up to her shoulders; the imam saying Allahu Akbar, Sami'a-llahu liman hamidah and the salam aloud; folding the hands immediately after the takbir without letting them hang; reciting the thana', the ta'awwudh and the Basmalah and saying Amin, and all of these being quiet; reciting the thana' first, then the ta'awwudh, then the Basmalah, each immediately after the other; saying the glorification Subhana Rabbiya-l-'Azim three times in bowing and keeping the fingers spread; keeping the back well level in the state of bowing; letting the hands hang on rising from bowing; the imam saying Sami'a-llahu liman hamidah on rising from bowing, the follower saying Rabbana laka-l-hamd, and one praying alone saying both; saying Allahu Akbar for going into prostration and for rising from it; saying Subhana Rabbiya-l-A'la at least three times in prostration; for prostrating, placing on the ground first the knees, then the hands, then the nose, then the forehead, and for rising from prostration, lifting from the ground first the forehead, then the nose, then the hands, then the knees; in prostration, keeping the arms apart from the sides and the stomach apart from the thighs, and not laying

the forearms flat on the ground like a dog; a woman keeping her arms against her sides, her stomach against her thighs, her thighs against her shins and her shins against the ground; sitting between the two prostrations as in the tashahhud and placing the hands on the thighs; in the prostrations the fingers of the hands facing the Qibla and held together, and the undersides of all ten toes touching the ground, that is, the toes being bent towards the Qibla; rising for the second rak'ah on the front of the feet with the hands on the knees; in the sitting, laying the left foot flat and sitting on it with both buttocks, keeping the right foot upright and turning the toes of the right foot towards the Qibla; a woman putting both feet out to the right side and sitting on her left buttock; placing the right hand on the right thigh and the left hand on the left thigh and leaving the fingers in their natural state; pointing at the testimony (shahadah); and in the final sitting, reciting the Durood Sharif and a transmitted supplication after the tashahhud. (Anwar-e-Shari'at)

An Easy Method for Lifelong Make-up Prayers (Qaza-e-'Umri)

(Performing the lifelong make-up prayers (qaza-e-'umri) is very necessary; as long as obligatory prayers remain owed, voluntary prayers are not accepted. Many of our brothers take great interest in the prayer of 'Ashura', Salat al-Tasbih and the like, but remain entirely heedless of the lifelong make-up prayers. If on the Night of Power (Shab-e-Qadr) and the Night of Bara'at (Shab-e-Bara'at) they performed lifelong make-up prayers in place of voluntary prayers, many prayers would be cleared from their account.)

To perform make-up prayers it is not necessary to perform, say, the Zuhr make-up only in the time of Zuhr; rather, apart from these three times, namely at sunrise, at sunset and exactly at midday (dahwa-e-kubra), one may perform the make-up of any prayer whenever one wishes.

In the lifelong make-up prayers, only the obligatory and Witr prayers are made up (that is, Fajr 2, Zuhr 4,

Asr 4, Maghrib 3, Isha 4, and three of Witr), not the Sunnah and voluntary prayers.

How to Make the Intention for Lifelong Make-up Prayers

For whichever prayer you are making the intention, say: the very first make-up of this prayer; or if you start from the end, say: the very last make-up. It is not necessary to say it with the tongue either; merely making a firm resolve in the heart is sufficient.

The Easy Method

The easy method for this is: do not recite the thana'; rather, in the first two rak'ahs of the obligatory and Witr prayers recite only al-Hamd and some short surah. In the empty rak'ahs, that is, the third and fourth, do not recite al-Hamd, but simply say Subhan Allah three times and go into bowing. In bowing and prostration, say Subhana Rabbiya-l-'Azim and Subhana Rabbiya-l-A'la only once instead of three times each. In the final rak'ah, after the At-Tahiyyat, say only Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa alihi and give the salam. In the Witr, in place of the Du'a-e-Qunut, simply saying Rabbi-ghfir li (my Lord, forgive me) is sufficient. (Summarised from Malfuzat-e-A'la Hazrat, vol. 1, p. 125)

The Khatm-e-Mujaddidiyyah

Reciting this khatm is extremely well tried for the resolution of difficulties, the success of important undertakings, and the attainment of affiliation (nisbat) with Hazrat Mujaddid (may his secret be sanctified), as it remains current in our order (silsila) to this day. With presence of heart, fix a time, recite it in a single sitting, and offer its reward to the most holy soul of Hazrat Imam Rabbani Mujaddid Alf-e-Sani (may his secret be sanctified). The method is this:

(1) Durood Sharif one hundred times; (2) 'There is no might and no power except with Allah' (La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah) 500 times; (3) 'Glory be to Allah and praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah the Magnificent' (Subhan Allahi wa-l-hamdu lillahi Subhan Allahi-l-'Azim) 300 times; (4) 'O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting, by Your mercy I seek help' (Ya Hayyu ya Qayyumu bi-rahmatika astaghith) 300 times; (5) 'I seek the forgiveness of Allah the Magnificent' (Astaghfiru-llaha-l-'Azim) 300 times; (6) 'O Possessor of Majesty and Honour' (Ya Dha-l-Jalali wa-l-Ikram) 300 times; (7) 'O Most Merciful of the merciful' (Ya Arhama-r-Rahimin) 300 times; (8) 'There is no refuge and no escape except to You' (La malja'a wa la manja illa ilayk) 300 times; (9) 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we shall surely be among the losers' 300 times; (10) then 'There is no might and no power except with Allah' 500 times; (11) Durood Sharif.

The Khatm-e-Khwajagan

Surah al-Fatihah (al-Hamd Sharif) with Bismillah seven times, and Durood Sharif one hundred times. The practice of our shaykhs has been this Durood Sharif:

اَللّٰھُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰی سَیِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَّ اٰلِہٖ وَ اَصْحَابِہٖ وَ سَلِّمْ

O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions.

Surah Alam Nashrah with Bismillah each time, 79 times; Surah al-Ikhlas, that is, Qul Huwa-llah, with Bismillah each time, a thousand times; Surah al-Hamd Sharif with Bismillah seven times; Durood Sharif one hundred times.

This is the khatm of the noble Khwajagan (may Allah sanctify their secrets). However, the practice of the shaykhs has been that after it they also recite the following words:

یَا قَاضِیَ الْحَاجَاتِ

O Fulfiller of needs (Ya Qadiya-l-hajat)

one hundred times;

O Sufficer in important affairs (Ya Kafiya-l-muhimmat)

one hundred times;

O Repeller of afflictions (Ya Dafi'a-l-baliyyat)

one hundred times;

O Raiser of ranks (Ya Rafi'a-d-darajat)

one hundred times;

O Healer of illnesses (Ya Shafiya-l-amrad)

one hundred times;

O Answerer of prayers (Ya Mujiba-d-da'awat)

one hundred times;

O Most Merciful of the merciful (Ya Arhama-r-Rahimin)

one hundred times.

Then let him raise his hands and supplicate, and reciting the Fatihah, convey the reward (isal-e-thawab) to the holy souls of the Naqshbandi Khwajagan.

Note: If some particular need or difficulty is faced, then one hundred times each of

O Causer of causes (Ya Musabbiba-l-asbab) and O Resolver of difficulties (Ya Muhallila-l-mushkilat)

should be added, but after

Healer of illnesses (Shafiya-l-amrad)

and at the end

O Answerer of prayers (Ya Mujiba-d-da'awat) and O Most Merciful of the merciful (Ya Arhama-r-Rahimin).

(Taken from the Shajrah Sharif)

Note: The Khatm-e-Mujaddidiyyah and the Khatm-e-Khwajagan are performed every Monday after the Zuhr prayer in the mosque of Huzur Bahr-ul-Irfan.
